A Rossington community centre is set to be transformed into a fantastic Fun Palace this weekend (October 1 & 2).

The Holmescarr Centre on Grange Lane in Rossington will be taken over by Doncaster’s Right Up Our Street team, who’ll be putting on an assortment of free arts and science activities for visitors of all ages, both inside and outside of the centre.

The event, which will run from 11am – 4pm will follow the theme ‘Everyone is an artist, everyone is a scientist!’ bringing hands on fun for all ages.

Sharon Richards, chair of ‘Rossington Parade and Community Arts Project’, said: “We’re really excited about the return of the Fun Palace to Rossington, following last year’s fantastic event.

“This will be a great chance for local people to come along and try out all sorts of fun arts and science activities. The centre will be turned into a really exciting environment where people of all ages can take part in a huge variety of creative and science-related activities. It’ll be a great day out for all the family.”
The Rossington Fun Palace is part of Fun Palaces 2016, a free, nationwide celebration of community, bringing people together with arts and sciences, taking place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October.
Based on a never-built idea from theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price, the first Fun Palaces took place in the UK and worldwide in October 2014, when 138 venues, locations, communities and groups created their own local events. Over 3000 people took part in organising these events, many of them as volunteers, and approximately 40,000 people participated Fun Palaces in person, while tens of thousands more engaged with them online. In 2015 the numbers rose to 142 Fun Palaces across the UK and internationally, with 50,000 people participating.
Fun Palaces create events that bring together arts and sciences – but above all PEOPLE – to work together, create together, have FUN together, and in doing so, build our own communities, from the grassroots up.
The Rossington Fun Palace will also have a visit from the Great Big Donco, the town’s mythical beast created by Right Up Our Street.

People from different community groups from across the borough worked with professional artists, writers and musicians to create the huge puppet and performance.

Funded by Right Up Our Street and the Yorkshire Festival The Great Big Donco was developed from the imaginations of many. Different community groups helped to create different parts of the Donco and the creature was brought together for the first time in performances at the finish line of the Tour De Yorkshire, it has since appeared at DNweekeND.

There will be juggling workshops, under 8s music workshops, re-read offering books and poetry writing.

The Holmescarr team and WI will also be presenting crafts, science, local history and much more.

“The whole idea of the Fun Palace is to bring together communities through culture, arts and science – an ethos truly engrained in our own Right Up Our Street project work,” added Sharon.

Rossington Fun Palace will be open from 11am-4pm on Saturday 1 October. Entry and all activities are free. Refreshments, including a barbecue, will be available to purchase on the day.
